I'm just a poor boy whose story's seldom told.
Thursday...
I forgot to mention in my last blog is that when we met on Tiberina Island we got our tests back in art history. Our professor starts ranting about how bad they were and blah blah blah...EXCEPT for the Davis test. Then she starts going on about how great my test was and how I was the only one to get an A. I wanted to crawl in a hole and die. Everyone was just looking at me, and I had a look on my face like "I didn't mean to, I swear" and, as aforementioned, "I want to crawl in a hole and die". She continues to contrast my paper with everyone else's, then we proceeded to do all our walking around. Ick. What a way to start off the day! Although, I was pretty proud of myself. I just hope I can do the same on my final tomorrow at 18:00. We also handed in our seven page papers.
Friday....
I can't remember anything, so moving on to Saturday.
Saturday....
I got up and came to the school to do the e-mail thing and see what everyone was doing that night. (Yes, the school was open on a weekend for a change.) I had totally forgotten that Simon and Garfunkel were giving a FREE concert in front of the Colosseum that night. I certainly was not going to pass up that opportunity. Well, some friends and I met and headed over about three hours before the concert starts. It was PACKED! I was really surprised because Romans show up to EVERYTHING late. I guess everyone who was there at that point were tourists. Well, the entire road of Via di Fora Imperiale (which runs straight from the Colosseum by the Roman and Imperial Fora into Piazza Venezia in front of the gigantic monument built by Mussolini to Vittorio Emanuele II) was blocked off. We end up standing about halfway down by the Basilica of Maxentius, which I'm not even going to elaborate on because I know waaaay too much about it at this point due to my art history class. All along the road they have large screens set up on metal scaffolding so everyone can see the performance. Well, we just chill out in the massive crowd until the show starts. Ooooooh, it was soooooo awesome. The came out on stage and spoke a little bit in Italian (which I'm sure they just memorized...their accents were SO bad). They played about three or four songs, then they start talking again (in English this time). This time they were talking about how they got started and their influences, including the Everly Brothers. Well, all of a sudden, THE Everly Brothers came on stage and play some of their famous songs with S&G. I was totally floored. I was just babbling. It was unbelievable. They played some of their songs, then the EBs went off stage. S&G continued their performance of some of their most famous songs like "Mrs. Robinson" and "Bridge over Troubled Water" and my personal favorite, "Scarborough Fair". And on top of all of this, the backdrop was absolutely perfect. The stage was set up RIGHT in front of the Colosseum (the orginal travertine part, not the brick reconstruction) with lights illuminating it different colors at different points in the act AND a very large moon low and just to the right over the Colosseum. It was absolutely surreal. So, knowing how big a fan Sandra is of S&G, I called her not long after the concert started just to tell her what I was doing. I also called her afterward to tell her how it went. Obviously, she hated me. But I digress. I was really disappointed that S&G didn't play "The Boxer" when they went off stage. Of course the crowd is going wild at the end (so am I), but I was still disappointed. Duh! I sooo should have known there was going to be an encore. They came back, played a little more, then ended with "The Boxer". After that, I was perfectly happy. The crowd is absolutely maddening...everyone screaming and clapping -- what a sight! It was also heck to get out of, but certainly more than worth the effort. Reports said that more than 600,000 people were there. That's over half a million people. That's a lot of people. I headed back and am not sure what I did after that. I probably just hung out a while in the apartment then went to bed.
Sunday....
I got up a little early to go to the big market that they have at Porta Portese (not too terribly far from my apartment) only on Sundays in order to obtain souvenirs. It was pretty large, though not as big as the Jockey Lot. However, I would classify both as cultural experiences. I walk around, buy some stuff, and return home. Not much to say. It's just a large flea market set up on the streets. I don't think anything eventful happened after this.
Monday....
I had photography class. It wasn't one of the more spectacular ones, so I'll spare you the details. We did go to the Theater of Marcellus, some Santa Maria church (I get them confused because there are so many here), and the Jewish Ghetto. After that, I think I went to pick up my enlargements for my portfolio that I had to present on Wednesday. Again, nothing terribly spectacular after that.
Tuesday....
I went to art history. We met at Piazza del Popolo and walked down Via del Corso to see some of the few remaining remnants of the Field of Mars. Then we went to the Pantheon. After class, I went to pick some more photos up over by the Vatican. I came back to do the e-mail thing. A little later on, a few friends and I went out for some drinks. Well, while we were out, I actually ended up meeting Mr. Cellophane from Chicago himself. Okay, sort of. He wasn't John Reilly, but he did play Amos Hart in the Italian musical. We talk for a while, then I ended up going home pretty late at 2:00 (well, late for a school night with class at 9:30 the next day). I end up getting home at about 3:00 because I was on a completely different side of Rome than I've been before. It was kind of nice seeing a different area of the city and being out of my element again.
Wednesday....
I showed my portfolio. Whoopdee doo. I came back, took a siesta, and hung out with Matt a while. We went and got some Arab food again. It was molto bene. We came back, hung out some more, then went to sleep.
Thursday, today....
So far, I had the review session for my final tomorrow. We also got back our papers that we turned in last week. I got an A. She, again, went off on how good my paper was, but at least this time I had one other person with me. Whew! Overall she was pleased with the papers, so no one was really getting fussed at. Whew again! Now I'm here blogging. I'm going to go downtown after this and hopefully finish my souvenir shopping, then come back and study for my final tomorrow at 6:00 PM.
See everyone in a little over a week -- YAY!!
